Introduction<\/h2>\n

O\u2019Reilly media publication also known as O’Reilly & Associates is a learning firm that publishes books, produces tech conferences, and provides an online learning platform established by Tim O\u2019Reilly. They are different from other publications as they provide woodcut of an animal on many of their book covers.<\/p>\n

History<\/h3>\n

The media company started as a private consulting firm mainly focused on technical writing in 1978, in Cambridge (Massachusetts area)<\/strong>. In 1984, they started publishing books about programming and computer technology, starting from manuals created for UNIX vendors. Few of the first 70-pages “Nutshell Handbooks”<\/strong> were well-received. They were held together by staples and had plain brown covers (in the picture – one of the original nutshell handbooks). The company started increasing production of manuals and books, after the conference of the displaying O\u2019Reilly\u2019s preliminary Xlib<\/strong> (is an X Window System Protocol<\/strong> Client written in C programming language, that contains functions for interacting with X server) manuals attracted significant attention. O\u2019Reilly\u2019s first popular book about the internet by Ed Krol<\/strong> named Whole Internet User\u2019s Guide and Catalog<\/strong>, helped to popularize the WWW(World Wide Web) in 1992.<\/p>\n

In 1993 O\u2019Reilly Media created GNN (Global Network Navigator)<\/strong>, the first commercial web portal. In 1995, GNN was sold to AOL (American Web Portal and Online services provider)<\/strong> in one of the big transactions of the dot com boom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Company is also widely recognized for organizing the conferences as well as summits. The Perl Conference launched<\/strong> by O\u2019Reilly in 1997 to promote Perl programming language. Open Source Summit (originally called Freeware Summit)<\/strong> in 1998. The Firm invited various notable leaders of various free software projects to tell a broader story about free software in the internet economy.
