\u201cBummer, something went wrong.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

The redirect to the application worked correctly, but authentication<\/a> failed during the callback phase.<\/span><\/p>\n

Root Cause<\/b><\/h2>\n

The application code was using <\/span>deprecated LinkedIn OAuth scopes<\/b>, while the LinkedIn Developer App was configured for <\/span>OpenID Connect (OIDC)<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deprecated OAuth<\/a> scopes (legacy):<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Modern OpenID Connect scopes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

LinkedIn does not allow mixing legacy OAuth scopes with OpenID Connect. This mismatch causes token exchange or user-info retrieval to fail.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to Identify If Your App Uses Old Scopes<\/b><\/p>\n

You can quickly confirm this by checking the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Authorization URL<\/b><\/h3>\n

If the login URL contains:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
scope=r_liteprofile%20r_emailaddress<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The app is using legacy OAuth<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>If it contains:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
scope=openid%20profile%20email<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Then the app is using OpenID Connect<\/span><\/p>\n

2. User Info API Calls<\/b><\/h3>\n

Check which LinkedIn APIs are called after login:<\/span><\/p>\n

Legacy OAuth APIs (deprecated):<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n
GET \/v2\/me<\/span>
\n<\/span>GET \/v2\/emailAddress<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

OpenID Connect API (current):<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
GET \/v2\/userinfo<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

3. Token Response<\/b><\/h3>\n

  • Legacy OAuth returns only an access_token<\/span><\/li>\n
  • OpenID Connect returns an id_token along with the access_token<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    If your code does not handle id_token, it is likely still using old OAuth logic.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Resolution<\/b><\/h2>\n

    The application was updated to fully support <\/span>LinkedIn OpenID Connect<\/b>:<\/span><\/p>\n
