RDS Instance Upgrade using Blue/Green Deployment

Step 1: Select the DB Instance that we have to upgrade, then select “Create Blue/Green Deployment” from the Actions.

Step 2: Give a name to Blue/Green Deployment.

Step 3: Now, select the version to which you want to upgrade the current running RDS Instance.

Step 4: Click “Create staging environment.”

Please have patience. It will take some time for provisioning.

It will take around 15-20 minutes, depending on the size

Step 4: Select Green Instance which now has an upgraded version of RDS MySQL. You can run the test by using the endpoint specified here.

Step 5: Once done as shown below, select the Blue/Green deployment that was created earlier, then select Switch over from Actions.

Step 6: Verify the details, and then select the appropriate time for the migration process If the migration is not done within the specified time, then it will time out and roll back to its original state.

Note: It will take some time to switch over the instance

Step 7: Now, finally remove the deployment stage by selecting that, then select Delete from Actions.

This screen might be visible to you, and then you can decide whether to delete it. This process will automatically remove the OLD instance containing the older version; if not, then you can manually delete that as mentioned in the next step.

Step 8: You can delete the old instance now, after verifying the DB status.
