What does a web designer do?

Web Designer Role

A web designer is a person who is creative and has knowledge of front-end development in web pages. The web designer can make a website functional while making sure that it is easy to access the information and it is visually appealing to its users. The world wide web(WWW)has become a vital element of our daily life. Almost everyone nowadays depends upon the web for communication, shopping, information, social life, etc. This has created a great opportunity for web designers. The web design industry is considered to be good with respect to job aspects and future growth as it has created a huge demand for web designers.

Web Designer vs Web Developer

We all have heard of two terminologies namely web designer and web developer. Both these terms sound similar but they are quite different in reality. A website needs both web designing and web developing to be fully functional and useful. Web designing is simply the visual structure of a website whereas web development can be considered as the backend functioning or we can say more technical work.

The job of a web designer
In simple words, designing web pages is the main job of a web designer. But the working of a web designer is not that simple as many things need to be considered which are not visible at the first glance of a web page. The visual appeal of a web page is an important aspect because the selection of fonts, images, colors, layout, etc creates the impression of the website. Along with the visual appeal, usability is also important. The page should be created, keeping in mind that the target market should be able to relate to it. For example, if there is a need to design a website whose target audience will be children, it should have an easy to read font with more images and minimal text so that it could hold children’s attention. The flow of the web pages should be such that it is easy to follow and the information should be easily accessible. The final web pages should be fun, attractive and easy to understand.

HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are widely used tools in web designing. They together form the basic structure of a website.

HTML – HTML is HyperText Markup Language which consists of a set of markup tags that are accountable for structuring the various elements of a webpage like paragraphs, images, links, headers, footers, etc. The search engine crawlers read the HTML of the website while indexing it. HTML is crucial to a professional and functioning website. So, there should be no mistake in HTML because it can result in visual irregularities on a website which sometimes is visible to its users. HTML can also break the entire website if there is a serious issue in the HTML structure.

CSS CSS(Cascading Style Sheets) can be considered as an addition to HTML to further enhance the user interface of a website. CSS is used to style the elements of HTML. For example, if we want to change the color of the font in all the

tags on a website, we can simply use CSS to set a certain color to the font of all paragraph tags. Similarly, we can customize various attributes of an element such as size, weight, style, etc. CSS can be very easy to understand for a small website, but it can get complex for big websites that have a huge number of lines of code behind them.

JavaScript JavaScript programming language is used with HTML and CSS. Out of many programming languages available, it is easier to learn. This language also works as a bridge between web designing and web development. Enhanced manipulation of HTML elements can be done using JavaScript. HTML and CSS only provide structure and style to a website. Only a limited functionality can be achieved by HTML and CSS like changing the size on hover or changing the color on click but JavaScript is meant for more complex functionalities. A simple example of JavaScript can be showing or hiding an element when the user clicks on a specific button. Web designers can have advanced control of the elements present on a website by using JavaScript.

A web designer’s duty is to build the overall appearance and impression of the website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A designer is usually creative and has the skills to choose colors that look pleasing to human eyes. The designer builds a website in such a manner that the information is intuitive and useful to the users.

Collaboration
Cohesive user experience is the responsibility of a web designer while a web developer creates the user interface itself. Individuals with various different skill sets like designing, development, and copywriting together contribute a number of hours of work to make a fully-fledged website. Industry-leading usability and overall user experience are often achieved when designers and developers work closely.
