O’Reilly media publication also known as O’Reilly & Associates is a learning firm that publishes books, produces tech conferences, and provides an online learning platform established by Tim O’Reilly. History

The media company started as a private consulting firm mainly focused on technical writing in 1978, in Cambridge (Massachusetts area). In 1984, they started publishing books about programming and computer technology, starting from manuals created for UNIX vendors. Initially, the company remained focused on the consulting business until 1988.

Few of the first 70-pages “Nutshell Handbooks” were well-received. They were held together by staples and had plain brown covers (in the picture – one of the original nutshell handbooks).
